Happiness is so subjective. I could write a whole blog post about the things that make me happy, but these will not always be the things that make you happy. Having said this, I do believe that there are a lot of common factors in our lives that help us to pursue true happiness. I hope that this post will encourage you to be reflective and make some small changes to your life, as most of the time being happy is a choice. So, please get comfortable with something that makes you happy (I would suggest a slice of cake haha) and read on. Remember to Like and Subscribe for future post updates.
I wanted to start by talking about meditation. Life is often a whirlwind of emotions and I know that day to day, I can get swept away amongst the chaos. However, by incorporating some form of meditation in my life I have the opportunity to tune out from all of the negativity and focus on the positives. When I think about meditation, I don't often associate this with a 40 minute practice every morning and evening, but I do take some time out of my day to do some yoga, or mindfully listen to music. Life is so busy and this can sometimes get you down, so make sure you find space to remember the simple pleasures.
Having positive relationships is such a central element to a happy life. I really do believe that you are the product of the people around you and I know that the closest people in my life all bring a different element that intern, makes me the person I am today. It is so important to recognise the relationships that lift you up, rather than the ones that bring you down- sometimes this is unavoidable and relationships won't be fine and dandy all of the time. But, be able to recognise the overall impact that person has on you and if they do not add something of value, then maybe reconsider how much time you invest in that relationship. When I think about my relationships, each and every one of them have something important to offer. Whether they are the ones who ground me, the ones who love me, the ones who humour me, they all have a positive influence on my life. These are the people who will impact your happiness, so treasure the ones who bring it and disconnect from the ones who don't- sounds brutal I know, but sometimes it is something that needs to be heard.
Focus on the things you CAN control. You're probably thinking yes Ella, this is easier said than done and I agree. However, if something is making you anxious or upset and you can influence this, then for sure, be proactive and change this. But, equally not everything in life is under our control and unless you can find a sort of acceptance within yourself then, you are going to be unhappy. It happens to me all of the time, worrying about the 'what ifs,' but what if, that time spent worrying about something, you instead distracted yourself by finding happiness in something else. Leading nicely onto my next point...
Do something you love every day. What better way to encourage happiness into your life than baking a cake! Well, for me anyway haha. There are obvious things in everybody's life that make them happy, even the smallest of things, such as playing with your dog or having a coffee with a friend. These things make the world go round and by trying to do one of these every single day, even on your worst days, you are almost guaranteeing some form of happiness. Hand in hand with this, is trying something new. I must say I really enjoy doing something that I have never done before, so here are some suggestions:
Ride a bike
Play a new board game
Cook something new
Tie dye your clothes
Read a book
Lastly, I just wanted to note that it is ok, not to be ok. Life sucks sometimes. I think 2020 has been the year that I've noticed this the most and to be honest, none of the events that made me upset were ones I could change, which meant that I had to deal with them. Whether this was by crying every single day, by getting a hug from someone I love or pulling myself together and getting on with it. But most of the time happiness can be a choice, so smile. Because, there are so many things to smile about.
